  What is Evil Part IV

Part III

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." -Ephesians 5:11
In the previous parts of this essay, we examined how the world is able to do evil to people. In this last part we will examine how darkness is conquered by light.

Think of how evil has been conquered in the past. Remember when the Catholic Church sold indulgences in the middle ages and Martin Luther stood up to their evil by nailing the 99 Theses to the door of the Wittenburg church. This act brought religious freedom to millions and intellectual changes still resounding throughout the world today. Remember how the United States struggled with what to do with slavery until Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This novel changed how people in the North saw slavery, and some say was a major impetus in bringing the start of the war between the states and the eventual end of slavery. I could go on and on, to mention Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and heroes from every country on the face of this earth.

I had a friend in college that told me, "Sin loses is power when it is exposed for what it is". I always think about that. More than just on a personal level, when evil is exposed it cannot retain all of its power. The tyrants of this world always need to "take the high road", to have a "moral imperative" for the actions they want to take. But when they are exposed, they lose that support, and sense of righteousness that buoyed them in the past.

When greedy corporations, unfeeling government, and corrupt religious leaders are exposed, they lose the good will of the public, the support of those in powerful positions who want to appear unsullied, and the credibility that allowed them to define evil as good in the past.

What I have started to think about lately is how its not just big lights that expose evil, but many small lights expose it as well. Letters to the Editor, picketers, people who write the president, senate, and anyone who will listen. Some people think that is just jousting at windmills like Don Quijote, but small voices can make a difference if there are enough of them.

When I first started this blog, I just wanted a way to blow off steam and write so I could get my head straight. But I see on my sitemeter the search engines have finally found me. When you type in "Call Center Injustice", this blog comes up on the first page. I'm not saying that to toot my own horn, I'm saying that to prove that my blog matters in bringing a little light to a dark part of my little world.

There are many blogs in this world that are making a difference; blogs like Real Live Preacher, Norsehorse, The Homeless Guy, and Finding Normal. I know there are too many to mention, these are just a sample.
The point is that the everyday people finally have a voice that is available to everyone all over the world 24 hours a day, even if they don't own their own computer.

All people matter, and all people can expose evil to make the world a better place.

Thanks for reading,

AC

Comments:
Personally, I think that the source of some evil is vengeance. Probably the most evil things on the table right now are nuclear bombs. How did the world blow itself up with them? Retaliation. Vengeance. But let's hope the question never gets asked in the past tense.

I don't remember who said it,
"An eye for an eye leaves the world blind."
