  "Real Women Have Real Curves"

Kudos to the Dove Company for the great new campaign using real women with real body types. I know some people don't like it, or think it's just patronizing or a just a gimmick. Here's what their website says about it:

"For too long, beauty has been defined by narrow, stifling stereotypes. Women have told us it's time to change all that. Dove agrees. We believe real beauty comes in many shapes, sizes and ages. That is why Dove is launching the Campaign for Real Beauty.

Dove's global Campaign for Real Beauty aims to change the status quo and offer in its place a broader, healthier, more democratic view of beauty. A view of beauty that all women can own and enjoy everyday."~Why the Campaign For Real Beauty?
Of course, it's about making money in the end. So what? I'm just glad to see the sorts of real women that have been my sisters and Mom, my ex-girlfriends and wife finally being celebrated as the beauties that they are. They are just as, if not more beautiful than the size two, surgically-enhanced models that seem to inhabit the rest of the media world.

It's about damn time the pendulum swang the other way, and healthy, normal, curvy women were celebrated instead of marginalized by unrealistic images that have been a part of our pop culture for way too long.

Thanks for reading,

AC

they live in college towns, bossman :) Honestly... went to the opening of the new mall out here--never saw so many fake pairs of tits in my life. i'm extremely self-conscious of my body, and I'm not sure that'll ever stop, even if I reach my "ideal" weight. We live in a society that judges us on first appearances. Even having the appearance of an outcast is a badge of pride... when it comes down to it, we talk a good game as a society, but we want to stand next to the pretty people. We assume unpretty people, and dare I say... fat people have something wrong with them that makes them that way.

You can kind of compare it to being an obsessive-compulsive neat freak. It's destructive... it can actually destroy families if mom or dad is anal retentive about the house... but it LOOKS really nice. It's a disorder that's encouraged and rewarded.... same with being obsessed with your own appearance and wasteline. You might have a dirty house, that really isn't dirty--just messy because you're busy or whatever... but people're going to think there's something wrong or broken or inferior about you, especially compared to the neat freak. Obviously if you can't work out enough, save up for an implant or two, or lose enough weight, you are broken or deficient or inferior in some sort of way.

Sorry. pet peeve.

TLG,
The same way we think that fat people must be to blame for their appearance we also judge poor people as being to blame for their poverty.

In both cases personal failure may be a factor, but not in all cases and under all circumstances.

Just like the boundaries of class and the belief system of a particular family will work to keep people poor, the eating habits and lifestyle and DNA of a family could work against being a healthy weight.

And....I can't think of anything else to add here....anyone???

Hi AC

New Zealand have recently gone through a Dove promotion as well. The website has had a makeover www.dovefacecare.co.nz but the jist of it was "normal" women from 18 - 50 could send in their photo and with selections made by the people of NZ they have got a new NZ Dove model. What fascinated me was that the finals all would be called pretty for their facial features but you could see they had 'real' bodies. The winner wasn't a stunner beauty but you could see an inner beauty.

By the way - Dove is one of the few products I can use since I've bad skin tolerance - and they're one of the few to recognise that people out there do have skin problems.

But overall I still think beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Snaps to you, AC! Way to get some good press on this ad campaign out! It's only when we start supporting these types of ads vocally (or on the Internet) that we can start to see a change in the way our society functions! (The BLS, a feminist? Get. OUT!) Yeah, I'm probably being a wee bit idealistic, but hey... your post is a start. :)

Thanks BLS!

AC, now I really love you :) Thanks for posting this.

You're welcome Brownie.
